Nikon D3400 Coming, D3300 Discontinued

It’s been quite some time since Nikon D3xxx lineup was last upgraded. The Dxxx line-up consitutes of Nikon’s basic entry level DSLR. It started with D3000 which was announced way back in 2009. Since then we have seen upgrades in the form of Nikon D3100, D3200 and the D3300 which was launched in early 2014. Its been over two years and almost thirty months to be precise.

It’s quite unusual that Nikon did not upgrade it for almost thirty months now. This indicates that either people are preferring the slightly more advanced Nikon D5xxx line-up or may be the market for entry level camera has gone down. The case may be similar to what happened to compact cameras after phone cameras hit the market. With the technology evolving faster than ever the phone cameras have almost outperformed compact cameras in terms of functionality, ease of use and even quality in some cases.

Nikon D3300 will sonn see an upgrade.

If the trend continues then it will certainly affect the entry level DSLR line-up next and that is bound to happen few years from now.

All things aside, the D3300 has been discontinued as reported by Japanese website and Nikon may well have something interesting up in sleeves. We may see an upgrade soon either as D3400 or Nikon may skip it and launch a D3500.

According to the rumors the new D3400/D3500 will sport a 24 megapixels sensor which is not surprising at all. Entry level market is obsessed with megapixels and that factor is an important consideration for all manufacturers in their marketing strategy.

Some additional details of the specification of D3400 are out and is as mentioned below:

  • No 4k video: That is obvious given that it will be just an entry level camera.
  • SnapBridge compatible
  • 24MP sensor
  • The D3xxx line will remain DSLR and will not go mirrorless
  • Announcement before Photokina, delayed because of SnapBridge issues

We expect to see a price drop in the current stock of D3300. It is still a great camera for the price and if coupled with good lenses it outperforms it’s Canon counterparts.

Considering that Nikon took close to thirty months to update this line-up we expect them to introduce some radical updates for the consumers. We will update you as we get more details about the specifications of D3400. Let us know what you expect from the D3400 below.

Edit: Nikon D3400 is launched and you can read more about the specs and see product images here.
