Hasselblad Launched This X1D Mirrorless Camera

Sony made waves few years ago when it introduced a full frame 35mm sensor in a compact mirrorless camera system with interchangeable lenses. Hasselblad just upped the level with the introduction of X1D, the first compact mirrorless camera to come loaded with a medium format sensor.

Hasselblad is treated like a reverent in the field of photography. If you have a lot of zeros in your bank account behind some non zero digit then it’s a great chance for you to be a Hasselblad owner.

The sensor inside this Hasselblad X1D is a monster 50 megapixels CMOS sensor and is the same chip which is found on the larger H6D medium format model.  In photography, generally a larger sensor always means better image quality, as each individual pixel can gather more light. This means better image reproduction, greater dynamic range (the ability for the sensor to resolve both dark and bright areas at the same time), and better low-light performance. Hasselblad X1D’s sensor captures up to 14 stops of dynamic range and has an ISO range of 100 to 25,600. Hasselblad has been in use by the professionals, particularly who work in the advertising genre where the final image is made for large billboards.

Specifications aside, the most interesting aspect is its size. Mirrorless cameras made a segment for themselves with full frame sensors in small body and this Hasselblad X1D just leveled up the large sensor game. Hasselblad medium format cameras are known for their big sensors and big bodies. It is cumbersome to transport them from one location to other and thus the use is generally limited to studio use. This X1D should be able change that game forever with it’s smaller size.

Hasselblad X1D measures just 150.4 x 98.1 x 71.4 mm (5.9 x 3.9 x 2.8 inches) and weighs 725g (1.6 pounds) which is just a fraction more than Sony Alpha 7R II Mirrorless system. One should be able to carry it easily on their neck all day or carry in a compact shoulder bag.

This camera will have it’s own lineup of lenses. Hasselblad is launching a 45mm and a 90mm lens along with the X1D. The X1D is also compatible with all 12 H System lenses via an adapter.

Features include an electronic viewfinder, live view touch screen, Wi-Fi, GPS, dual SD card slot and 1080p Video shooting. The camera body is moisture and dust sealed which is a welcome addition given it’s smaller size.

At $9000 for body only it surely will cost you a small fortune but definitely nothing compared to the Hasselblad H6D which costs $27,000. So if you ever dreamed of being a Hasselblad owner then this is a great chance. The wealthy amateurs and professionals who are looking for a Leica alternate would be drooling over it. After-all it looks beautiful too.
